Gorleston needed a play-off to win their Stenson Shield second round tie against Haverhill despite have made a clean sweep of the foursomes.

Gorleston were five up when Josh Manser won the top singles 8 and 6 against Andrew Underwood.

Then the Haverhill players surpassed themselves with six wins in the singles. Andy Fish, Liam Merritt, Jack Kennedy, David Spittle, Paul Bartlett and Jack Warwick all won. It was just as well for Gorleston that their team captain, Danny Perring, had taken a point from the last match with an 8 and 7 victory over Harvey Bavester.

It was a tense finish. Tommy Hunt of Gorleston was all square with Warwick on the 18th tee. Warwick had a birdie and a play-off was required.

Perring settled it in favour of the home club with a birdie to beat Spittle.

It was almost a similar story at Stowmarket where Aldeburgh seemed comfortable at lunch with four points from the foursomes.

Then Stowmarket hit back. Former professional Kevin Earp set the ball rolling with a one-hole win over Gregor Tait. Then Ian Kitson and Arthur Patten were beaten before Will Wright steadied the Aldeburgh ship with a win over Ryan Turnbull.

Even then it was in the balance. Owen Clouting and Henry Cutting won for Stowmarket. Aldeburgh’s James Keely was one down against Daniel Voysey until he chipped in on the 17th to draw level. The final hole was halved and a play-off averted.

Hintlesham scored a convincing away win at Rushmere. Their heavy artillery, in the form of Jack Cardy, Sam Debenham and Adrian Meredith were all firing effectively. Rushmere had no answer although Kevin Eagle arrived in the afternoon for his usual win in the singles!

Rookery Park won at Fynn Valley by nine matches to three after suffering a shock in the top foursomes when Luke Thompson and Guy Mummery lost to Jim Davey and Mark Wilder by one hole. It was a notable scalp for Valley.

Davey also won his singles against junior Conal Downing and Traven Abbott defeated Mummery. Otherwise Rookery were in control.

Felixstowe Ferry had conditions in their favour against Bungay with the sea breeze to which they are accustomed. Even so Peter Ogden and Sam Bingham won their singles matches and Liam Hansey held Paul Sayers, a former club champion, who had not turned out in a Stenson tie for many years.

Newton Green went down against holders Woodbridge on Bromeswell Heath. It was a repeat of last year although it was a good day for Russell Oakey who won his foursomes with Harvey Watts and then beat Dominic Rosser in the singles.

Although Mike Polley beat Steve Mann and Jed Seeley beat Simon Peckford, it was Phil Ashenden and greenkeepers Toby Ayes and Tom Fowler who remained solid for the home team.

Ipswich won all their foursomes against Diss at Purdis Heath although they were all close matches. Josh Cottrell and Connor James beat Josh Driver and Chris Bartrum one up.

Diss showed their teeth in the afternoon but wins for Driver, James Biggs, Charlie Taylor and reserve Charlie Stammers were not enough.

Bury St Edmunds, handed home advantage because Thorpeness had problems with tee times, would have had a whitewash but for Jack Cuthbert holding Trevor Titcombe to a half.
