RISING Colchester star Ross King rounded off the Trinity Park Criteriums with a sterling ride that ensured the top category competitors never saw the front of the race.

The 16- year-old Velo Schils rider from Colchester took the flag ahead of Martin Barley and Stefan van Pooke. The fast group – containing more riders than usual - failed to form itself into the smooth speed-machine seen on some previous Wednesdays. The group did not make up the two minutes deficit set by the commisaries at the start and ended up fighting for fourth place – taken by Mike Auger (VC Norwich) from Lowestoft man Liam Gentry.

It was a day for young riders with 17-year-old Hugo Robinson (Ipswich Bicycle Club) collecting the top overall award at the end of this highly successful series of races promoted by Ipswich BC and backed by Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk County Council.

The final Go-Race for novices was won by Nick Moon from Terry Smith and Paul Wright.

National Competition Record at 15 miles for a mixed tandem crew has been beaten by Anthony Stapleton and Corrine Francis of the Chelmer CC. Riding the CC Breckland 15 on the Attleborough bypass in cool conditions with a strong crosswind they finished in 30:31.

Solo winner was Peter Balls of West Suffolk Wheelers who finished in 31:08. Best lady was Ann Shuttleworth of the Chelmer (36:50) while Evert Wjinberg from Kesgrave continued his sparkling season – in his 63rd year – by taking the top handicap award with his 33:03.

TWO former Kesgrave cycle speedway stars, Dan Zagni and Tim Snook, showed they can still put in a tremendous sprint over a short distance when they both qualified for the four man final of the Gasp Up Gas Hill in Norwich. With crowds lining the barriers along the length of the short, sharp hill, Zagni, second in the cycle speedway worlds in 1998, led from start to finish, with Ipswich BC clubmate Snook close behind until a late burst from Will Bamber (Cult Racing) relegated Snook to third.

Team CCN’s Glenn Stanford and Shaun Aldous took the 10-hour race for pairs in the Mud, Sweat and Gears Summer Enduro in the Brandon Park area of Thetford Forest. Laura and Andy Sampson (Stowmarket & District) took the 10 hour mixed pairs. Richard Dunnett from Occold was men’s ten-hour winner, while Dan Howe (TROG) took top prize in the six-hour and Walden Tri secured the eight-hour pairs. A morning shower was perfect to consolidate the sand before a largely sunny afternoon.

CHRIS Guy from Beccles and Mark Howard from Shenfield paired up to dominate the VC Norwich road race at Wicklewood. They broke clear within minutes of the start and rode a 2-Up, between 30 and 90 seconds off the front of the bunch until the final climb when Howard faded but Guy just hung onto take the win.

RED Lodge man Mark Arnold’s 3:55:46 helped Pedal Revolution win the team medals at a windswept National 100 miles Championship. Andy Bason finished in 3:39:11 and Nik Bowdler in 3:37:41 to complete the team.

David Mclean had a clear five minute win in the Newmarket C&TC Hilly 21. The nearest challenge to his 45:54 was 50:55 from Andre Dyason. The Southend Wheelers 50 went to Steve Dennis (East Grinstead CC) in 1:47:58, ahead of Andrew Leggett (Stowmarket & District, 1:57:02).
