Rick Andrews insists there is no chance of his Stowmarket Town side getting ahead of themselves despite their recent upturn in form, writes ALEX MOSS

The Old Gold and Blacks head into today’s clash, with Ely City at Greens Meadow (3pm), in 10th place in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division table, having won five and drawn two of their last seven league outings.

Victories on the road at Hadleigh United and Long Melford last week saw Stow climb into the top half for the first time since August, but while optimism may be growing around Greens Meadow, Andrews says his feet will remain firmly on the ground.

“Look at Saffron Walden, they beat Felixstowe then lost 3-0 to Stanway, so I do think there’s a huge danger of complacency (in this league),” he said.

“I think when you start thinking you’ve cracked it, you can come up against anyone in this league and if you’re not at it you can drop points, simple as that.

“All we can do is to try and keep this run going for as long as possible.

“Our aim at the end of the 90 minutes is to have got more points on the board, whether that be one or three.

“We’re seven games unbeaten in the league now. We’re looking a threat going forward and defensively we’re getting tighter. A combination of the two is a recipe for success.”

Stow have not lost a league game at their Greens Meadow home now for almost 18 months, but today’s opponents Ely will be looking to complete an early season double over Andrews’ side having won the reverse fixture 2-1 in Cambridgeshire on September 2.

“We lost to them earlier in the season to the most bizarre own goal you’re ever going to see,” Andrews said.

“Saying that, I thought they defended really well and they could have added on the break, but we were chucking players forward.

“It wasn’t our best of days but taking nothing away from Ely, they’re a good side. Brady (Stone, Ely manager) has got some players back that had left the club.”
