Stowmarket’s Mark Royal begins his World Open Singles Championship campaign against Gary R. Smith at the Just Retirement World Indoor Bowls Championships at Potters resort, in Norfolk, next Thursday.
The 2008 Welsh Open winner, who is ranked number nine in the world, will face record five-time winner Alex Marshall MBE or Julie Forrest in the second round should he progress past the England international.
Meanwhile, Katherine Rednall, 17, will play against Eleanor Gass in the quarter-finals of the Ladies’ World Matchplay Singles on Saturday January 18, having qualified for the event for the very first time.
Rednall, a Stowmarket High School pupil, will also partner three-time men’s champion Andy Thomson in the Mixed Doubles against Alex Marshall MBE and Alison Merrien MBE on January 17 with a semi-final game in prospect against Darren Burnett and Karen Murphy or Greg Harlow and Janice Gower in the last four.
