Perhaps it is the 2012 Olympic legacy inspiring a younger generation in Suffolk, but to top a fine sporting year, eight young swimmers from Stowmarket Swimming Club were selected to represent Suffolk at the Eastern Three-Counties swimming gala just before Christmas.

Bethany Skoulding, Luca Clarke, Manfred Battle, Jack Spain, Alex Harrison, Robert Lancaster, Liam Kerry and Toby Upson all competed for Suffolk against the best from Norfolk and Cambridge.

Not to be overawed by the occasion, five of the Stowmarket swimmers won their races and helped Suffolk to an overall convincing victory.

Stowmarket Head Coach Sylvia Harrison said: “It is a real honour to be selected to swim for your county when there are so many strong swimming clubs in Suffolk so we are justly proud of how well our young swimmers have done.

“We have some promising and talented swimmers coming through at Stowmarket, reflected by the fact that 34 swimmers aged 16 and under have qualified to swim in the Suffolk County Championships in March, the pinnacle of the season”.
