Stowmarket Town have made midfielder Scott Chaplin their latest summer signing, writes Alex Moss.

The 29-year-old has agreed a one-year deal to join the Old Gold and Blacks as their fourth addition of the post season, as Rick Andrews bolsters his attacking options ahead of the players’ return for pre-season next week.

The former Ipswich Town youth prospect has spent the last two seasons at Felixstowe & Walton United, where he scored 25 goals in 91 appearances and helped the Seasiders gain promotion to the Bostik League for the first time in their history last term.

After being with Ipswich until he left school, Chaplin joined the football scheme at West Suffolk College, which saw him progress into the Bury Town first team.

A spell at Needham Market then followed for the midfielder, before spending four years at Hadleigh United from 2012 to 2016, the highlight of which was winning the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division with the Brettsiders in 2013-14.

Stow boss Andrews said: “We approached Scott halfway through last season about joining up. At that time Felixstowe were top of the league and chasing the title, so it was always going to be a tough decision for him.

“We agreed to leave the door open and speak in the summer, which has led to today’s announcement.

“In my opinion, he fits into the squad perfectly both on and off the pitch. He has won the league with Hadleigh and obviously gained promotion last season with Felixstowe.

“He can play in a variety of positions, which I like as I want to continue the flexibility we have within the squad. I’m looking forward to working with him, starting next week.”

Paul Lambert is confident Ipswich Town can quickly overturn their five point deficit if they continue the progress they have made in the early weeks of his reign.
