Felixstowe’s strikers take the plaudits as Seasiders make it four out of six in Bostik North

This was an all-round, solid team performance from Felixstowe & Walton at the weekend and the 2-1 win over Romford puts the Seasiders in a comfortable fourth place in the Bostik North.

But no matter how hard everybody works, it’s normally the strikers, the goalscorers who grab the limelight.

This was the case at The Goldstar Ground on Saturday where joint coaches Kevin O’Donnell and Ian Watson started with two up front, as they did against AFC Sudbury in the Velocity Trophy last Tuesday, this time with Miles Powell and Jack Ainsley.

The move paid off with both men finding the back of the net.

Powell, whose effort sailed over keeper Rhys Hughes on 13 minutes, settling early nerves, admitted after the game; “I’ve been lacking a bit of confidence recently and it’s been a bit of a drought so it was nice to put this one away.”

As well as scoring, Powell also provided the assist for Ainsley who netted from close-range on the half hour.

Speaking to Seasiders TV after the game, Ainsley said; “I’m happy to get off the mark and I enjoyed playing up front with Milo.”

The Boro did pull one back following something of a scramble five minutes before the break, with former West Ham man Taylor Tombides ensuring the second half would be a close encounter.

Ainsley could have added to his goal tally early in the second half when his lob from 35 yards beat the Romford keeper only to hit the post before bouncing out of play.

And so it’s four Bostik North wins from six games, which has to be seen as a satisfactory start to the season for Felixstowe, although nobody is being complacent down at The Goldstar Ground.

Powell added:“ We’ve got to realise we are not going to win every game.”

Next up for Felixstowe on Tuesday is the visit of Soham Town Rangers in the third of five home games on the bounce and, despite the Cambridgeshire side sitting bottom of the table at the moment, nobody expects anything other than another tough game.
