Sudbury Cricket Club have been crowned champions of the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League, the top club competition in the region, for the first time in their history.

Sudbury’s title decider against former champions Swardeston was abandoned as a draw, without a ball being bowled at Friars Street, due to the wet weather.

It was always going to be a tall order for Swardeston, who had won the title for the previous five years, to make it six in a row.

They came into the last match trailing Sudbury by 21 points, meaning that the Suffolk hosts only needed four bonus points to win the league – they had also won more games than their Norfolk hosts, in the event of both sides finishing on the same number of points.

Sudbury, who only won promotion to the EAPL last year, won 16 of their 22 fixtures, and only suffered four defeats. They are skippered by Tom Huggins.
