Suffolk athlete, Callum Wilkinson, will be competing for England in the men’s 20km race walk at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Queensland, Australia, this weekend.

Wilkinson, of Moulton near Newmarket, enjoyed his first taste of a senior major championships last summer, when finishing 41st at the IAAF World Championships in London.

Now the former King Edward VI pupil will be toeing the start-line in his first Commonwealth Games appearance, tackling a 20-lap 1K course at the Currumbin Beachfront. The race takes place local time at 7am on Sunday, which is 10pm on Saturday evening (BST).

Wilkinson is targeting a personal best time, and is hoping to finish in the top half of the field. Aged 21, he will be one of the youngest competitors in the field.

It should be a valuable experience for Wilkinson, the 2016 World Junior 10K champion, whose mentor Ron Wallwork has accompanied him to Australia.
