SUFFOLK were crowned Spitfire National Over-60 2nd XI champions after beating favourites Sussex in the play-off final at Frinton on Tuesday.

Sussex chose to field and Suffolk made a good start with Dougie Andrews (48) and Graham Penny (30) putting on 68 for the first wicket in 16 overs. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals all the batsman made useful contributions to a final total of 192 for six.

Sussex started slowly in reply and always struggled to keep up with the required rate against the accurrate Suffolk bowling of Bob Perrett, Russ Abbott, Roger Ingham, Alan Burt, Mark Sargeant and Derek Cook.

The bowlers were backed up by some very keen fielding to keep the batsman under control so that 53 runs were required from the last five overs. This proved to be too much as Suffolk finished worthy winners of an excellent match to crown a successful season.

Suffolk 192 for 6 (D Andrews 48, G Penny 30, R Ratford 24, M Sargeant 23no, B Perrett 22). Sussex 179 for 7 (Meads 50, M Sargent 3 for 29). Suffolk II won by 13 runs.
