Two teenagers are poised to play for Suffolk for the first time in their final T20 group games this weekend, writes Nick Garnham.

Nineteen-year-old George Loyd and Freddie Heldreich, who is just 16, have been called into the squad as Suffolk travel to Harpenden on Sunday to face Hertfordshire in back-to-back matches.

Frinton captain Kyran Young and former Kent all-rounder Adam Ball are both unavailable, while Billy Moulton-Day and Tymal Mills are both injured.

Moulton-Day, who took two wickets in the final over of the first game against Bedfordshire to steer Suffolk to victory, is ruled out by the groin injury which forced him to sit out the second match.

England T20 international Mills, who had originally agreed to only play in Suffolk’s first three matches, had made himself available only to pick up a quad injury playing for the ICC World XI against the West Indies at Lord’s on Thursday night.

Jake Wakelin is recalled as fellow all-rounder Josh Cantrell is ruled out by a hand injury.

Suffolk have called up left-arm medium pacer Loyd, who has already taken a five-wicket haul for Bury St Edmunds in the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League this season, and Framlingham College student Heldreich.

Suffolk head coach Andy Northcote said: “Both George and Freddie are products of the Suffolk Young Cricketers and this really is another exciting opportunity for our Young Cricketers to stake a claim in the team.

“George went on the pre-season tour last year so has been there or thereabouts for a while.”

Despite one-run and eight-wicket victories in last Sunday’s double-header versus Bedfordshire at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk still need to win both matches and hope other results go their way in order to possibly squeeze through on net run-rate.

Northcote said of Suffolk’s chances of qualifying: “At best, it will come down to all other results going our way and net run-rate but, in reality, we are just about out already.”

Suffolk team: Jaik Mickleburgh, Jake Foley, Darren Batch, Ben Shepperson, Jack Beaumont, Tom Rash, Adam Mansfield (wkt & capt), James Poulson, Jake Wakelin, George Loyd, Freddie Heldreich.
