Suffolk golfer enjoys St Andrews success

SUFFOLK golfer Jamie Abbott finished with a respectable score of one over par in his first round at the historic British Open.

Playing alongside Zane Scotland and Tom Pernice Jnr, the Fynn Valley golfer carded three birdies and 12 pars in his round of 73.

He finished as the second-placed amateur behind South Korean Jin Jeong, who carded a four-under 68.

North Irish starlet Rory McIlroy leads the pack with a stunning nine-under 63, while world number one Tiger Woods finished at five-under.

Abbott tees off for his second round at 3.48pm tomorrow and will need another solid round to be in with a chance of making the cut.
