Two Suffolk golfers have enjoyed a glorious start to June. Ipswich-based tournament professional Jamie Abbott and Culford Academy teenager Max Adams have hit the headlines.

Adams, who plays for Bury St Edmunds in the Stenson Shield, won the US Kids Golf European Championship at Luffenham New course in Scotland. Abbott won both Jamega Tour tournaments at Luton Hoo, where he twice equalled the course record of 64, and The Wychwood. He banked more than £6,000 and once again earned free entry into the Portugal Pro Golf series next winter.

Abbott said: “I am hoping for invites to Challenge Tour events especially after making the cut in the Portuguese Open European Tour event at Morgado in May.

“I will continue to play Jamega Tour events but hope to qualify for the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale and, of course, the season builds up to the PGA European Tour qualifying school.”

Abbott will play in the Europro at Luton Hoo between July 26 and 28. It would appear to be a perfect venue for him.

Adams, coached by Lawrence Dodd, entered the US Kids Championship. Don’t be fooled by the title. It caters for youngsters from the age of 10 but Max was in the top 15 to 18 age group which played off back tees at Luffness New in Scotland.

Then Adams, still only 15, finished a shot ahead of Campbell Gibson from Perth with rounds of 72 74 and 73 to win the European Championship. He sunk a six-foot putt on the last green to win.

He represented Western Europe against International Countries, partnered by Gibson, in 18-hole better ball stroke-play for the European Van Horn Trophy at Gullane.

Adams and Gibson won their match against Liam Culley (The Philippines) and Max Hansen (South Africa). Every age group took part with International Countries winning by five and a half matches to four and a half.

Adams now travels to the United States to play in the US Kids World Championship at Pinehurst in North Carolina between August 3 and 5. What a great experience that will be.
