Suffolk New College’s girls volleyball team are preparing to represent the east in a national competition after being crowned regional champions.

The team fought off stiff competition from colleges across the region to win gold and qualify for the AoC Sport National Championships at the University of Nottingham over the weekend of 21 to 23 April.

The achievement was all the more remarkable because, due to illness, the team was made up of only four students – two fewer than their opponents. But the powerful serving of Jekaterina Usacova combined with plenty of hard work on the court helped propel them to victory in the Eastern Region tournament, held at Luton Sixth Form College.

Sports Centre Manager Trudy Sharman said: “The girls worked so hard, they supported each other and they were absolutely buzzing when they won. It’s a fantastic achievement.”
