George Fricker (Farlingaye HS and Ufford Park) won his singles in both his appearances for England Schools.

He beat Abe Forsyth of Wales in the first match at Luffenham Heath. He followed up with a one-hole victory over Connor Wilson of Scotland at Troon Darley after he had been three down with five to play. Fricker lost his foursomes on both occasions.

England beat Wales by 11.5 to 6.5. The boys beat Scotland 14-4 and the girls, managed by Sarah Wilson of Bramford Golf Centre, won 7-2.

Amelia Williamson of Royal Cromer halved her foursomes and won her singles against Wales.

In the Scotland match, Amelia and Amy Taylor (Bawburgh) teamed up to win the foursomes at Troon Lochgreen. Both won their singles.

Apart from Fricker, who played in the Suffolk second team, in the Anglian League earlier in the season, Suffolk have a squad of very promising juniors.

The youngest-ever Suffolk Open champion Alfie Halil (Flempton) and Suffolk Matchplay champion Louis Martin (Haverhill) both made a good impression on their Anglian League debuts against the Lincolnshire second team at Woodhall Spa.

In the foursomes Halil and Martin battled back from three down to salvage a half. In his singles Halil sunk a 10-foot putt on the 18th green to secure his half.

Also making his debut was 19-year-old Adam Sheldrake (Felixstowe Ferry) who scored a convincing 6 and 4 win in his singles. All three will surely be involved in the future.

There are others knocking on the door. Suffolk junior champion Conal Downing of Rookery Park had an impressive season culminating in a round of 78 in the England Golf junior county champion of champions tournament on Saturday.

Harvey Watts (Newton Green) retained his junior match play title and is still young enough to challenge for a hat-trick next year. He played for Suffolk’s second team in the Anglian League two years ago and is certainly good enough to play again.

The long-hitting Tom Auchterlonie (Woodbridge) has made rapid strides this year. He took Will Wright (Aldeburgh) to the final hole in the Stenson Shield final.

Then there is 16-year-old Habebul Islam (Ipswich) whose handicap is plus one. He has been concentrating on national events.

His fourth place in the McGregor Trophy was a highlight of a season that will end with the North of England Open Amateur Championship at Alwoodley Golf Club between October 3 and 5.

It is the final England Golf order of merit event of the year.
