Ollie Bocking will make his Unicorns Championship debut for Suffolk in the three-day fixture against Norfolk at Copdock, starting on Sunday, writes Nick Garnham.

The 22-year-old former Ipswich School right-arm opening bowler was a regular for Essex 2nd XI last season, and has played two first-class matches for Leeds/Bradford MCCU.

Bocking, who plays his club cricket for Colchester & East Essex, replaces Sudbury’s Jonny Gallagher from the side that beat Bedfordshire at Bury St Edmunds.

Suffolk head coach Andy Northcote said: “He’s been on our radar for a while, wintered with us previously but has struggled with availability due to university.

“Jonny fitted in like a glove off the field and, although he bowled well at times over the four innings, unfortunately did not pick up a wicket.

“This meant his position as a front line seamer becomes hard to retain. Of course, I hope he goes back to Sudbury and performs as the door will reopen for him.

“Our selection policy is simple; old and new players are looked at and performing on the field for their respective clubs carries great weight. “We feel it generally makes people more hungry for the challenge of championship cricket. I do hope to see Jonny again in the match 12 soon.”

There is one other change to the Suffolk side, with Copdock & Old Ipswichian batsman Jed Cawkwell available for his first championship match since the 2016 season.

Cawkwell scored a superb 143 in only his third championship match on his home ground at Copdock, against Cambridgeshire two years ago, but only played two further three-day matches since.

Northcote said: “We have been keen on Jed since his debut season with us. He is a solid top-order batter with a sound technique and the ability to bat for long periods of time. The championship suits him ideally.

“Unfortunately, or fortunately for him I guess, last year he played very little cricket due to family commitments and getting married, so was not able to play.”

Suffolk squad: Jaik Mickleburgh, Jed Cawkwell, Kyran Young, Darren Ironside, Jack Beaumont, Ben Shepperson, Mike Comber, Tom Rash, Adam Mansfield (wkt & capt), Josh Cantrell, Ollie Bocking, Jake Foley.
