Kevin Lisbie drove home a shot from inside the box to give the U's a first half lead, before MK Dons' half-time substitute Jude Stirling was dismissed within nine minutes of his introduction for hauling down Lisbie in the area.
Lisbie's spot-kick was well saved by keeper Willy Gueret, but Colchester were able to make their numerical advantage count when Prutton lashed home a 25-yard drive within two minutes of his arrival.

The win means Colchester have closed the gap on third-place Charlton to five points, while they are also just eight points behind second-place Leeds following their shock defeat at Swindon.
