COPDOCK & Old Ipswichians skipper Chris Swallow hailed his side’s “unbelievable effort” after their tenth straight success moved them up to second and kept the pressure on leaders Mildenhall in Division One of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship.

An opening partnership of more than 150 between Jonny Rice (86) and Archie Gravell (79) set the tone for Copdock as they racked up 342 for four at bottom team Abberton on Saturday.

Copdock then bowled out their hosts for a meagre 75 as Swallow returned figures of 8.5-3-11-5, with Andre Nel taking three for 18, to increase their chances of a second title in three years with four matches to play.

Swallow, whose side have won ten and had two matches abandoned since they last lost on May 28 at Mildenhall, said: “It has been an unbelievable effort to win as many games in a row as we have done, and there have been some fanastic performances in there.

“I have told the boys all we can do is win our remaining games between now and the end of the season and what will be, will be.”

Copdock moved up to second after Wivenhoe were left frustrated by the weather at home to Haverhill, who were 143 for six when the rain came and the match was abandoned.

Mildenhall, like Copdock, claimed maximum points as they brushed aside Coggeshall, who were bowled out for just 70 in 36.4 overs, James Holmes (5.4-0-13-4) and Lennox Lwana (10-6-5-3) doing the damage.

Mildenhall required only 11.4 overs to reach their target, Joe Reed scoring 42 not out.

Abberton look doomed and Maldon’s chances of joining them in Division Two were not improved after their home match against Ipswich was abandoned.

Exning were seven-wicket winners against Woolpit, Daniel Baigent and Ian Starling taking four wickets apiece, before Ollie Fowlston’s 64, which contained nine fours and two sixes, completed a comfortable victory.

After losing just once in their opening 16 fixtures, Division Two leaders Lakenheath lost for the second weekend running – this time by eight wickets to bottom team Brockley after being bowled out for 63! Dean Sykes (15-5-18-4) and Isaac Reed (15-4-27-3) were the principal architects of their downfall as Lakenheath slipped to 20 for six. Patrick Kearney’s 30 not out then saw Brockley home inside 14 overs.

Hadleigh’s six-wicket win at home to Braintree saw them cut Lakenheath’s lead to 17 points, with Elmstead Grasshoppers just a further point behind after disposing of Brightlingsea by eight wickets. Openers Jordan Elliott (54) and Mark Perrin (72 not out) put on exactly 100 on the way to overhauling Brightlingsea’s 178 for nine.

Elsewhere there were nine-wicket wins for both Easton (against East Bergholt) and Ipswich & East Suffolk (against Woodbridge & OW) .

In Division Three Mark Nunn scored his second successive century for Bury St Edmunds II while Atif made 116 for Clacton II and Lewis Kirk, son of Gary Kirk, followed up his 52 with figures of 11-7-9-6 as Halstead II were routed for 33.
