Mike Bacon takes a look at five things we learned about the Ipswich Witches in their win over Edinburgh Monarchs

Team character

With Michael Hartel out injured and skipper Danny King having to pull out of the meeting with the Witches just a couple of points up, this had disaster written all over it for the Foxhall side.

Edinburgh were well in the meeting and in Mason Campton had an inspired guest.

But the Witches showed real character to come through, none more so than Connor Mountain who had endured a difficult start to the night, but came good late on. His heat 14 ride a thriller.

The Danny King worry

Danny King clearly still has real issues with his arm that he suffered nerve damage in after a crash with Hartel a month ago.

Ipswich will be concerned over their skipper, who never stops trying.

But it was clear against Edinburgh the arm is far from right. He did the right thing in pulling out of the meeting. But Witches fans will be hoping their skipper is back in full fettle soon.

If not, Ritchie Hawkins and Chris Louis will be burning the midnight oil trying to reshuffle their team before a hectic July and August.

Nico Covatti

The popular Argentinian has endured a difficult 12 months with injury. But against Edinburgh he was back to his best.

Now signed on with Somerset in the Premiership as well as the Witches, hopefully more racing in England will boost both Covatti and the Witches.

The Foxhall fans

There has been a distinct lack of speedway at Foxhall this season.

Nothing to do with the Witches promotion but with the new Championship fixture list that sees clubs only ride each other home and away once. Last year it was twice.

But the fans continue to show their support. And how they love their team and riders.

Foxhall always has a good feel to it, even when the going gets tough.

Leading from the front.... Rory Schlein

This is proving a great season for Rory Schlein.

The Aussie is leading from the front not just at Ipswich, but also at Wolverhampton where he doubles up. Again, against Edinburgh, he was rock solid.

On and off the track, a vital cog in the Witches team.

Tristan Nydam is keen to make the most of his loan stay in Scotland but is still keeping a firm eye on parent club Ipswich Town.
