COLCHESTER United boss John Ward admitted that he was “absolutely thrilled” by his team’s performance in today’s 4-1 home win over Oldham Athletic.

A brace from Anthony Wordsworth, and a couple of early second-half headers from Ian Henderson and Matt Heath, earned the U’s a richly deserved first home win of the season.

The Latics sole reply was a controversial penalty by Reuben Reid, which had pegged the score back to 1-1 on 36 minutes. But the U’s responded superbly.

Ward enthused: “We have really entertained. As the home team we are always in the spotlight to do well in front of our supporters, and we have done that as well as we can today.

“I have been really excited by what I have seen from my team.

“With the ball, you should wax lyrical about what we have done, and off the ball we have also done extremely well, winning it back.

“We look a very fit and strong team, I am absolutely thrilled with the performance. I think it’s been terrific,” added Ward.

The one disappointment for the U’s was the small attendance of 3,023.

Hopefully, a few more performances like today’s display will encourage a few more people through the turnstiles.
