It’s understood the deal is an initial £1.6m with the potential to rise to around £2m following add-ons.

The 24-year-old – who has been handed the No.9 shirt left vacant by Martyn Waghorn – has penned a three-year contract, with Town also having the option to extend that by a further year.

“There were a few offers from other clubs but once I knew Ipswich wanted me, that was it. I just wanted it to happen,” Jackson told the club website.

“I enjoyed working with the gaffer and Doigy (Chris Doig, assistant manager) at Grimsby and to have the chance to work with them again, it was a no-brainer for me.

“It has not been an easy few weeks with all the speculation going on but I took it as a confidence booster that other clubs wanted me.

“I just concentrated on what I could control and just hoped it would get done and now it is, I’m delighted. It’s unbelievable.

“I’ve always wanted to play at the highest level possible and I’ve got the chance now to play in the Championship with Ipswich. I’ve got to take it with both hands.”

A lightning quick front man who can play up top or out wide, Jackson scored 16 goals as Stanley won the League Two title last season.

He is reunited with Blues boss Paul Hurst having played under him in the fourth tier during a loan spell at Grimsby Town in 2016/17.

Having failed to make the first team breakthrough at both Swindon and Barnsley, the bulk of his career has been spent in non-league with spells at Swindon Supermarine, Oxford City, Tamworth and Wrexham.

He becomes the ninth signing of the Hurst era, following on from Jon Nolan, Toto Nsiala (Shrewsbury, £2m double deal), Ellis Harrison (Bristol Rovers, £750k), Gwion Edwards (Peterborough, £700k), Janoi Donacien (Accrington, loan with view to £750k), Trevoh Chalobah (Chelsea, loan), Tayo Edun (Fulham, loan), Jordan Roberts (Crawley, free).
