Ralph Pruden’s side – who thrashed Larkhall Atheltic 8-1 in September to reach the first round proper – are in fine form having won all five of their games this month, scoring 26 goals and only conceding two.

Basildon, who play a step higher in the pyramid, started the game well and applied most of the pressure in the first 20 minutes.

The home side were struggling to use their scraps of possession but when they finally did it created the first real chance of the game. The ball was played forward to Jade Henry who took it on before turning her defender hitting the crossbar with a 25-yard effort.

This was a turning point for Ipswich who now started to play with more belief and made better use of the ball

It was Basildon who came closest to breaking the deadlock before half-time though, forcing a smart save from Sian Fagg.

The second half was pretty even, but Town got the decisive breakthrough in the 70th minute when winger Zoe Cossey scored her sixth goal of the season by brilliantly chipping the ball over keeper Runnacles into the corner of the net from outside the box.

Ipswich looked threatening from Amanda Crump’s dangerous set-piece deliveries and Runnacles twice did well to claw the ball away from Lindsey Cooper when she look set to score.

The visitors then put on the pressure on massively in the final 10 minutes but Town defended well, survived a penalty shout, while keeper Fagg pulled off a couple of great saves.
