Tristan Nydam is hopeful of playing in a homegrown Ipswich Town midfield alongside Flynn Downes and Andre Dozzell in the not-too-distant future.

Nydam and Downes both burst onto the scene this season while Dozzell’s campaign was cruelly ended by an opening-day knee injury, with the England Under-19 trio impressing during their early steps into men’s football and offering hope for the future as the Blues begin a new era.

With young strikers Ben Morris and Ben Folami also making their Championship debuts in recent weeks, Nydam believes there is plenty to be excited about at Portman Road and sees no reason why the club’s group of young players can’t continue their progression.

“Hopefully that will happen,” Nydam said.

“Obviously Andre had his set-back this year and Flynn went out on loan (to Luton) but hopefully next year, if not the year after, then that (playing together) can happen.

“I don’t see why not. All of us have pushed on this year and have all had a good season. We all push each other on so I don’t see why that couldn’t happen.”

Nydam insisted the club’s senior players are playing their part in helping young players improve.

“The senior boys are great with the younger boys, even the Under 23s and Under 18s,” he said.

“They’re brilliant with them and there’s no separation in the squad whatsoever so it’s a real good team.”

Nydam was named in caretaker manager Bryan Klug’s first Ipswich side at Nottingham Forest last weekend and enjoyed the experience as he played under a coach who has been key in his development since his early teens.

“It was brilliant because I’ve worked with Bryan since I was 13 or 14 so I know what he’s like and what he’s expecting of me,” said Nydam, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s visit of Aston Villa.

“He’s helped me with my football and helped me mature by telling me what I’m good at and what I’m not good at and what I need to work on.

“I’ve been learning about men’s football and how they do it in the Championship but, with experience, I will learn and become more mature.

“He likes players to be brave, confident on the ball and to express themselves. He’s trying to pass that on to us.

“I like having the ball at my feet because I can express myself and impact the game.”
