ANTHONY Wordsworth looks increasingly likely to have played his last game for Colchester United, although the Essex club have still not received a formal bid for their talented midfielder.

Neighbours Ipswich Town are leading the chase to snap up the creatively-minded Wordsworth, whose current contract with the U’s expires this summer.

A number of other Championship clubs have also been linked with Wordsworth in recent weeks, including Charlton Athletic, Peterborough, Leicester and Middlesbrough.

However, U’s chairman and owner Robbie Cowling revealed today: “There’s nothing to report yet.

“Other clubs do seem to be interested in Anthony (Wordsworth), but as yet I have received no concrete offers.”

Wordsworth is currently serving a two-match suspension, for accruing 10 bookings, which caused him to miss yesterday’s 2-1 home defeat to Scunthorpe United, which condemned the U’s to the relegation zone.

The 24-year-old will also have to sit out next weekend’s trip to bottom club Hartlepool United, although by then he could already have moved on to a Championship club.

The fact that the U’s risk losing Wordsworth on a free transfer this summer will probably see him leave during this month’s transfer window, possibly for a fee of around £200,000.

And at the moment, Ipswich look to be in the box seat, especially as Charlton boss Chris Powell, who was previously linked with Wordsworth, recently confirmed that he had no immediate plans to signs the Colchester maestro.
