Walsham-le-Willows boss, Trevor Newman, admits that his side have been “over-achieving” this season, but he believes that they can stay in the top five.

The Willows face a tough test at home to second-placed Godmanchester Rovers this afternoon. Goddy are currently three points behind leaders Histon.

However, Newman’s men are also riding high, in fourth spot, following last weekend’s 1-0 win at Haverhill Rovers.

In fact, if they can win today, then they would leapfrog Godmanchester in the Thurlow Nunn Premier table, to be either second or third by tonight, depending on how third-placed Wroxham fare at Haverhill.

The Willows have been in cracking form of late, winning six of their last seven matches, with the other a draw.

“We are on a good run” confirmed boss Newman.

“It’s a very competitive division, and we are probably over-achieving at the moment.

“I thought we would do better than we did last year, but it’s fantastic for us to be as high as we are, in the top four.

“We are not used to being this high up the league, because we’re usually in the bottom eight or something like that, trying to get as many points as possible to just stay up.

“So to be where we are at the moment is fantastic.

“We have momentum, although Godmanchester will be a difficult game this weekend.

“But at the moment we have nothing to lose really. People don’t expect us to be up there, and possibly Haverhill didn’t expect us to be up there last weekend.

“I think we can stay up there.

“We have got two or three key players in the side, down the spine of the team, including keeper Steve (Fenner), striker and captain Jack (Brame) and (Andrew) Cusack.

“If we lost one or two of those, especially Steve, who is such a composed keeper, then we might struggle for a period of time.

“But at the moment, if we keep everyone fit, then we can keep our good run going. It remains promising.

“Haverhill are a good side, as they showed last weekend. In fact, every game in this league is a hard game, and if you’re not up for it then you’re going to get beaten,” added Newman.
