FORMER Ipswich Town defender Wayne Brown’s change in priorities have helped influence his decision to drop out of the full-time game and sign for Bury Town.

The 34-year-old left Preston North End in the summer but has been training with Colchester United, Peterborough and Bradford and recently turned down a deal to stay in the Football League as he did not want to uproot his young family again.

With over 300 Football League games under his belt and a promotion to the Premier League with Hull only three years ago, Brown still has plenty to offer but his family, other business interests and a reluctance to be a ‘bit-part’ player made up his mind.

“The agreement I have with Bury is that if a Football League did come in for me in January and it was worth my while financially and geographically, then I would be allowed to leave,” said Brown.

“But when Phil Brown came in at Preston, he told me I was not going to play and I spent four months training at the club but not playing at the weekends.

“I am fed up with all the politics that come with full-time football and I don’t want to be anywhere just making the numbers up. I was also fed up travelling from Hull, where I was based, to former clubs Leicester and Preston.

“I am also getting involved in the family business which is something I am looking to progress and my wife is expecting a baby in December.”

Brown could make his debut for Town at home against Harlow in the Ryman League Cup tonight.

“The club is ambitious and wants to win promotion to the Conference South,” said the defender.

“I played with manager Richard Wilkins at Colchester, when I had a spell there early in my career, and he said he would love to have me at the club.”
