Welwyn Garden City 2 Colchester 1

Colchester finished their league season with a tired effort against bottom side Welwyn Garden City on Saturday.

The home side started sharply and had Colchester on the back foot for much of the first half. However, with no real efforts on goal by Welwyn, Colchester sneaked an early lead against the run of play. A fine cross from the right by Lucy Struth was met by Terri Chiam, who slotted in from close range. The sides went into half time with Colchester leading 1-0.

The second half opened up a little more for Colchester but the passing wasn't sharp enough to break open the Welwyn defence. The home side levelled the game with a scrambled shot which Colchester were unable to deal with.

Welwyn got the winner with ten minutes remaining when a seemingly high penalty corner strike was allowed to stand. Colchester did fight back once more and earned a penalty flick, only to see the Welwyn keeper save it and her side's three points.

Although disappointed, Colchester finished sixth in the league, a good effort for their first season in the division after gaining promotion last season.
