Whitton United boss Shane Coldron has said his side will not rest on their laurels after a good run of results has propelled them up the Thurlow Nunn Premier table.

The Greens have won three of their last four league games and sit ninth. This weekend they travel to Newmarket Town.

It’s a fine run of form for a very young side and Coldron, although not getting carried away, is delighted.

“It’s great to get points on the board as ultimately our target this season is sustainability and to stay in the league,” he said.

“We have played two of the top six teams at home and secured victories, which is pleasing, along with a thrashing of Ely away with an excellent performance.

“I was disappointed to drop points against Framlingham where I felt we outplayed them for the majority of the game.”

Whitton, along with fellow Suffolk sides Fram and Woodbridge, were all promoted last season and all are slowly starting to find their feet after quiet starts.

Coldron knows patience is key.

“It’s been an indifferent start to the season for my young squad with inconsistent performances,” he said.

“However injuries to key players hasn’t helped matters.

“The league this year seems to be very competitive with every club having lost a game along with bottom six teams beating top six teams. I have tinkered with different formations to suit opposition and player availability. However in the last two victories, it has been the passion, desire and attitude that has got us through.”

And Coldron paid tribute to former Ipswich Town academy player Kevin Inglis, who has been key to assisting his young players.

“While the squad is full of mainly under-23 players it has been Kevin who has rallied the team in recent weeks guiding the group to secure the positive results.”

Newmarket sit below Whitton in the table and were knocked out of the FA Vase last weekend at home to Deeping Rangers.

Coldron knows what to expect.

“Saturday will be again be tough fixture against an organised team with vast experience throughout their squad and a league position that bares no real meaning due to only 10 points separating sixth to bottom.”
