Whitton United boss Shane Coldron has said it is time for his side to ‘start taking it seriously’ – not that the Greens haven’t been doing so.

Indeed, the Ipswich-based Thurlow Nunn Division One team have probably exceeded their own expectations with their current second-placed position in the table, as well as two FA Vase victories over Step 5 sides and more than £1,200 in winnings in the coffers.

Today they travel to Diss Town, with Coldron admitting he has perhaps underestimated how good Whitton are.

“We are doing really well,” he said.

“I don’t think even I realised how good this bunch of players is. We are second in the league and have beaten two Step 5 sides (Haverhill Rovers and Barkingside) in the FA Vase. We have youth and rawness, as well as experience.

“Perhaps it’s time for us to start taking it seriously over what we can achieve this season.”

Coldron is understandably hugely proud of his young squad.

They have stepped up to the plate, although Coldron, who was assistant manager at Stowmarket last season, knows there are other good sides in Thurlow One.

“For me, there are four sides who will compete for promotion,” he said.

“Woodbridge are still out and out favourites, Holland are a good side, as are Framlingham. And of course I put us in there as well.

“But I think we can do this.

“There is plenty to work on but we approach every game the same, whether it is a team near the bottom of the table, or a Vase team a Step above us. It’s all a big positive.”

Whitton have recently swooped for George Mrozek, the former Woodbridge and Ipswich Wanderers man scoring a peach of a goal off the bench last week in the 5-2 drubbing of Needham Market Reserves.

“George is a good striker and we have plenty of options up front, which allows me to rotate players,” Coldron added.

Also in Thurlow One today, Woodbridge face a stiff test at leaders King’s Lynn Reserves, while Halstead entertain Debenham, Holland travel to Braintree Res.
