TEAM Sky’s Bradley Wiggins is in the leader’s Maglia Rosa today after powering to victory in the prologue in Amsterdam.

The Briton recorded 10 minutes 18 seconds in the opening 8.4-kilometres time-trial, two seconds ahead of BMC’s American rider Brent Bookwalter. World champion Cadel Evans of Australia took third.

Wiggins’ triumph means that Team Sky have secured a Grand Tour stage victory at their first attempt.

Triple Olympic champion Wiggins becomes only the second Briton to lead the Giro, the first Grand Tour of the year, after Mark Cavendish (HTC-Columbia) won pink in 2009.

Wiggins and his team will now attempt to defend his jersey for the next week or so, though he is not expected to be a contender for the full race.
