Ryman Premier Division new-boys Witham Town host Conference South outfit Weston-super-Mare in an FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying tie today, where a win would see them advance into Monday evening’s First Round Proper draw of the much-adored and ‘magic’ competition.

Having already made their history books a little bit thicker by progressing to this stage, Witham will be doing all they can to win today’s prize money of £12,500, and in doing so, enter the draw alongside a host of League One and Two clubs, most notably giants Sheffield United and Preston North End.

A home draw against Essex neighbours Colchester United would ultimately be the dream for a side who currently ply their trade in non-league football’s third tier, having won promotion from the Ryman North last season – but to have any such dreams, Witham must first upset Conference South side Weston-super-Mare FC at the Village Glass Stadium, Spa Road this afternoon.

Seeing as though they are situated in the league above Witham, Somerset-based Weston-super-Mare understandably enter today’s game as the favourites but, with home advantage, Witham will have a great chance to provide an upset.

Even more so considering the length of travelling their opponents have to make (a 400-mile round trip), and the fact that the Seagulls currently sit second-bottom of the Conference South.

Witham boss Garry Kimble is looking forward to what is undoubtedly a massive occasion for the club, but wants his players to remain focussed on the task in hand.

“We can’t let the occasion overrule us,” declared the Witham chief.

“It’s been nice to break the records book, get ourselves some recognition, and put ourselves on the map.

“We’ve got the smallest budget in our League by far, and although the FA Cup money has obviously helped, we don’t have the budget of some of the other sides in our division.”

If Witham can progress today, it will be somewhat of a fairytale story for a Cup that provides drama and magic throughout the footballing fields, professional and non-league, over its season-long duration.

Regardless of today’s result, one man that will certainly be looking down on his club with great pride and honour is former chairman Tony Last, who suddenly and sadly passed away in July earlier this year.

“I’m sure Tony will be looking down with a prayer for us on Saturday, and if we win we’ll be looking up with tears in our eyes,” added Kimble.

“Everyone at the football club wants to win the game, and everybody at the football club wants to win the game for Tony. He’s Witham Town through and through, and it’s sad he can’t be here on what already is an historic day, but we’ll do all we can to get the victory.”

Kimble has a fully-fit squad to choose from today as he ponders his team selection for what is undoubtedly the biggest game in the club’s history.

The FA Cup itself has been in town this week as Kimble, his players, club officials, fans, and local schools have all posed with the Cup. Why not show your support for Witham Town today? Kick-off is at 3pm.
