The 25-year-old Republic of Ireland striker has already been shown around the Premier League new boys' Compton Park training ground after Wolves triggered a release clause in his contract.

The signing would be more double than their joint-record fees of 3m for Kenny Miller and Ade Akinbiyi.

Wolves have already signed midfielder Nenad Milijas from Red Star Belgrade and Doyle's former Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann.

Molineux boss Mick McCarthy is attracted by Doyle's Barclays Premier League experience; the striker played in Reading's two seasons in the top flight before their relegation to the Championship a year ago.

Doyle, who has scored 55 goals in 154 League games for Reading, only signed an extension to his contract last November taking him through to June 2011.

He had also attracted interest from Everton and Aston Villa.
