Woodbridge & District Bowls League completes season with finals day at Yoxford club

The Woodbridge & District Bowls League completes the 2013 playing season with the Finals of the Individual Competitions at Yoxford Bowls Club near Saxmundham on Sunday, September 15, starting at 10am.

There are some interesting finals but the interest of many supporters will be watching the up-and-coming bowlers contesting the Under-25s two bowl singles competition and the Under-16 challenge competition.

The object of the latter is to promote bowls for young people and to allow them the opportunity to compete on a stage where their skills can be noticed. The age range for these young bowlers is between 11 and 15.

One of the contestants in the main competitions is Ella Baker of Melton BC who is also eligible for both the Under-25s and the Under-16s competitions. She partners her father Mark in the Mixed Pairs Final and teams up with Mark and 2013 EBF National Secretary Cup winner John Kilby in the two bowl triples late in the day.

It could be a busy day for Ella if she progresses from the preliminary rounds in the Under-16s challenge, which will have taken place at Yoxford on September 8, but the experience she will gain will prepare her well for her future in bowls. There will be two 11 year olds on show later in the afternoon.

The game of bowls is no longer a game dominated by the older generation but seeing is believing.

The 2013 National Ladies pairs runners-up Jane Pitcher and Linda Nunn are also in action, as are Pam Kemp and Jackie Whitlock, who reached the 2013 National semi-final of the three bowl triples with partner Beryl Last. It promises to be a good day of bowling and if the weather is kind then there is no reason not to enjoy a grand day out.
