A NARROW win in a thrilling finish against Mistley kept Woolpit top of Division One of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship.

Damien Smith was run out off the penultimate delivery of Saturday’s match as Woolpit edged home by just three runs to maintain their lead over Haverhill.

Chasing 169 for victory, the home team dipped from 30 for one to 85 for eight, before Paul Garwood and Stuart Dove added 41 for the ninth wicket.

When Garwood departed for 19, after a partnership based on sound shot selection and sensible running between the wickets, Mistley still required a further 43.

Stuart Dove and Smith then added 39, before Smith was adjudged run out, leaving his partner stranded on 40 not out and Woolpit winners.

Earlier, opener Craig Rutterford’s 44 from 91 balls was the mainstay of the visitors’ innings, with useful contributions from Matt Collinge (32), Dom Crame (25) and Will Parker (20) in their 168 all out, Kyran Young claiming 15.5-3-40-4.

There was an equally exciting end to the match at Frinton, where the home team hung on to win by four runs against Coggeshall.

Maldon recorded their first victory of the campaign thanks to a four-wicket success at Lakenheath.

Gary Bannister bagged four for 20 as the home team were bundled out for exactly 100, and skipper Jimmy Ainscough’s 26 off just 29 balls provided the impetus to see his side get across the finishing line.

Mildenhall picked up their first win of the season thanks to an 80-run victory over Ipswich.

Azeen Ghumman, Mildenhall’s new player-coach, made 61, Andrew Squire a fine 50 before he was run out, Fran Bester a solid 44 and Steve Lankester a quickfire 41 not out in their total of 257 for five.

Joe Rusby (35) and James Alder (77) put together a century opening partnership, albeit slowly, and the innings fell away as they were dismissed for 167.

Haverhill’s 36-run win at home to Exning kept their visitors rooted to the foot of the table, after four rounds of matches, along with Elmstead Grasshoppers, who went down by 57 runs at Wivenhoe.
