MILDENHALL closed the gap to just eight points as Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship Division One leaders Woolpit lost for the first time this season.

Maldon inflicted a seven-wicket defeat on Woolpit, for whom only Michael Jones (57) and Will Parker (28) made double figures in their total of 132 on Saturday as Jack Riley removed the top three on his way to figures of 14-2-33-4.

Chris Harris (45) and Ian Elliott (59 not out) then eased Maldon to victory with 17 balls to spare.

Lakenheath remained rooted to the foot of the table after an eight-wicket loss to near neighbours.

Michael Reeve (48) and Robert Horrex (56) added 94 for the fourth wicket in the home team’s 158 for nine, but thanks to an opening stand of 108 between Tom Westley (84) and Fran Bester (39) Mildenhall raced to their target in just 22.5 overs.

Elmstead Grasshoppers recorded their second win of the campaign against Exning in a match which featured two centuries.

Tim Catley’s undefeated 103 provided the backbone of the home team’s total of 202 for six, with Doug Harris bagging 16-2-49-5.

Jordan Elliott (101) and Mark Perrin (43) then added 118 for the second wicket before both fell to Catley as Grasshoppers romped to a seven-wicket win to leapfrog Exning and Coggeshall, who lost by eight wickets at home to Ipswich, after they were restricted to 140 for eight.

Mistley moved up to third place after a comprehensive victory at Haverhill, who consequently drop to fifth.

Haverhill were back in the pavilion for only 68 before Richard Pineo followed up his 16-4-22-5 with 30 not out.

The day’s other top-flight encounter saw Frinton win the Essex derby at home to Wivenhoe by six wickets, after they successfully chased 178 to win.

Essex batsman Billy Godleman’s 74 underpinned Wivenhoe’s innings, but Trevor Moulton followed his four wickets by becoming one of four Frinton batsmen to score 30 or more in reply.

Witham won their eighth match in a row at the expense of visitors Ipswich & East Suffolk in the top-of-the-table clash in Division Two.

Opener Michael Headley, who scored 73, was one of Mark Sproats victims as he took 11-2-31-6, but no-one was able to play a major innings for IES as they ended 25 runs short.

Worlington walloped Mildenhall 2nd XI by 147 runs to move into second, Jimmy Watson leading the way with 125 not out, and Marlon Dias made 104 for Hadleigh, adding 122 with Tom Piddington (65 not out) in a seven-wicket win against Woodbridge & Old Woodbridgians.

Exning have withdrawn their 2nd XI side from Division Four of the competition. All their results have been expunged from the records and the table amended accordingly.
