MORE than 1,000 youngsters battled it out in a host of Olympic sports at the Suffolk Youth Games.

Children across Suffolk arrived at Whitton and Northgate Sports Centres yesterday hungry for success at the annual sporting extravaganza.

Events included athletics, badminton, basketball, hockey, rugby tag, girl's football, table tennis, tennis and cricket.

Gold, silver and bronze medals and trophies were awarded to the winners.

Tracey Brownlow, event manager, said: “It went really well and the weather held off.

“It's more about encouraging new children into sport but we do see some new talent emerging.

“It's a fabulous day. We're trying to encourage all children to be more active. It helps reduce crime and disorder and tackles obesity. Sport can hit lots of different agendas.”
