From live music on the seafront to poetry, classic cars to hands-on science fun for the kids, a chance to try sailing, exhibitions and more – there is plenty to do in Felixstowe over the next seven days.
Friday, August 10:
The Felixstowe Group of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust is holding an Evening Walk at Landguard Nature Reserve to explore the area’s fascinating and varied nature from 7pm to 9pm. All welcome – meet at Manor Terrace car park. Cost is £2.50 per person.
Saturday, August 11:
Eight hours of live music can be enjoyed in Felixstowe’s award-winning Spa Gardens – to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Music in Felixstowe.
Proms on the Prom will take place from 2pm to 10pm and will include a variety of music from experienced musicians plus a musical workshop.
It is being staged at the open area next to The Hut, near the ice cream kiosk and chalets at the bottom of Bath Hill/Undercliff Road East. Bring a picnic tea – and keep fingers crossed the weather holds.
Admission free. Everyone welcome.
Programme for the day:
2pm: Clarinet and String Trio – a short concert of light and popular classics, followed by a workshop where you can come and have a go on different instruments.
3pm: Quartetto Familia – string quartet playing well-known classical music.
3.45pm: Seckford Brass – a rousing selection of brass music.
4.30pm: Verity Poulson – talented young jazz singer.
5.15pm: Wade Ablitt and Co – presenting songs from his new musical.
6pm: Stringfillies – European folk music.
7pm: Felixstowe Community Choir.
7.30pm: Evening Prom – the Festival Orchestra, with conductor Jeremy Hughes, present a programme of film music.
Sunday, August 12 (and daily throughout the summer):
A great day out for families – try the Summer Holiday Trail at Landguard Fort.
The fort in Viewpoint Road is open from 10am to 4pm and there is plenty to explore inside with displays in the rooms, and lots of history to discover at the place which has the unique distinction of being the last place England was invaded. This summer there is also a quiz trail around the fort.
Normal admission charges for the Fort apply, plus £1.50 for a trail sheet (including a Landguard Fort pencil).
Sunday, August 12:
Fans of cars from yesteryear can enjoy a Classic Car Display at Felixstowe Museum from 11am to 3.30pm.
The museum is housed in the Ravelin Block – once home to a submarine mining unit – next to Landguard Fort.
The display is staged by the Suffolk Vehicle Enthusiasts’ Club and admission is free.
You can also visit the museum – normal admission charges apply – and see the fascinating displays on the resort’s history.
Sunday, August 12:
Ever fancied having a go at sailing? Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club is hosting a RYA “Push The Boat Out” event from 2pm to 5.30pm.
It’s a chance for novices to try their hand – under the watchful eye and guidance of the sailing club’s experts – at sailing with dinghies and catamarans in 30-minute sessions afloat.
The RYA says those attending should come suitably dressed and prepare to get wet.

Monday, August 13:
Hands-on activities will help children get to grips with science at Science on the Sand between 10am and 3pm on Felixstowe beach. Kinetic Science is staging the day on the shore near the Visit Felixstowe Tourist Information Centre beach hut (opposite the Town Hall), Undercliff Road West – admission free, drop in any time during the day.
Monday, August 13:
Health walks have been running in Felixstowe for some years now – a chance to try a shorter walk with good company and keep yourself fit.
Today’s walk is a regular Monday fixture – along the seafront. It sets off from the entrance to Felixstowe Leisure Centre, Undercliff Road West, at 10.45am – every welcome and admission free,
The walk lasts between 40 and 60 minutes (depending on the walkers and weather on the day).
The event is hosted by trained Stepping Out in Suffolk volunteer walk leaders.
Wednesday, August 15 - Saturday, August 18
Held every two years, the Felixstowe Photographic Society is staging its 12th Biennial Print and Digital Photography Exhibition over four days.
It takes place at Trinity Methodist Church Hall, Hamilton Road/Orwell Road, and will be open from 10am to 8pm from Wednesday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturday.
On show will be more than 100 prints and 200 projected images. Admission free.
Wednesday, August 15:
Felixstowe Children’s Choir will take centre stage at the Music in Felixstowe – Young Musicians’ Showcase at St. Andrew’s Church, St Andrew’s Road. Take your sandwiches (tea and coffee provided) and enjoy the lunchtime concert, from noon. Admission free – collection on door.
Thursday, August 16:
Poetry is alive and thriving in Felixstowe – thanks to the Felixstowe Café Poets.
The group meets at the The Orwell Hotel, Hamilton Road, at 7.30pm and all lovers of poetry are invited – published or unpublished – and people are welcome to shared poems, too. Admission £2.50.
