The awards bash was held in London for the first time in more than 20 years, with the EMAs last being hosted in the city in 1996.

The Castle on the Hill hitmaker beat off stiff competition in the best live category to win the award, being voted above Eminem, U2, Coldplay and Bruno Mars.

Ed was also nominated in the new best artist category, which replaces the best male and best female categories as MTV opted to drop all gendered prizes.

Alongside the 26-year-old nominee was pal Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Kendrick Lamar and 19-year-old winner Shawn Mendes.
