The smell of the grease paint and the thrill of the highwire were in large supplies last night as Billy Smart’s Circus kicked off four days of entertainment under the big top.
The troupe of up to 25 performers rolled up on Hardwick Heath, in Bury St Edmunds, on Wednesday, with the crew spending most of yes-terday setting up for the shows which continue today at 4.45pm and 7.30pm; tomorrow at 3pm and 6pm; and on Sunday at 3pm.
Daring acts from all over the world are featured with performers from Romania, Portugal, Switzerland, Germany and Australia. But England is also represented in the shape of Miss Caroline, who comes from Peterborough, a former dancer with Billy Smart’s who, in the true spirit of the circus, learnt her solo trapeze act while on the road.
The circus moves off from Bury to Lowestoft next week followed by Saffron Walden and then Colchester.
