The Torwood Wheelers group from Kesgrave will be holding taster sessions at Kesgrave Sports Centre tomorrow (Saturday) from 1pm to 7pm, and on Sunday, from 10am to 4pm.

The weekend will give beginners the opportunity to learn the basics of wheel gymnastics as well as watch live performances by members of the club who will show the variety of moves possible using the two types of wheels.

The group, which was set up in 1999 by the current president John Colles, incorporates both cyr wheels (single rim wheels) and German wheels for people to learn gymnastics on.

John Colles said: “We invite anyone who is interested to our national training day, bringing people together from all over the country.

“I first saw the sport in Switzerland in the ‘60s and brought the concept over here and 20 years on we are still the only club in the whole of the country.”

This weekend and for the last few years, the national training workshop will be led by Kris Madden, a cyr wheel expert from Bristol, while the club trainers will teach the German wheel to newcomers.

Mr Colles, who retired from running the club a couple of years ago, said: “There are a number of people who come year after year, but we also get many new people who want the opportunity to try the sport. We currently have a number of vacancies for new members so everyone is welcome.”

The president handed the club over to James Gardiner who has recently represented England in the World Championships in Italy.
