With their first album for 14 years, Cincinnati rockers Afghan Whigs brought a storming set to the Obelisk stage on a scorching afternoon.

Opening with a hunting violin intro, they soon cranked up the guitars and had much of the audience on its feet.

Frontman Greg Dulli’s rasping vocals rang with clarity and passion and you could feel that he meant every word of his frequently dark, imploring lyrics.

The whirlwind of guitars strayed off into the realms of Pink Floyd’s The Wall and even Jesus Christ Superstar, which played right into my hands.

At times they sounded like Kasabian, at others the Cure or the Pixies.

Without pausing to talk to the audience they raced through a high energy set in a slot that seemed to be scheduled far too early for the riotous reception they deserved.

They were allowed to overrun due to James being postponed, but I would still have liked more.
