The historic Little Hall in Lavenham is the focal point of an artist in residence project this month.

Artist Lucy Perry, who works from her studio in nearby Thorpe Morieux, will be sketching and photographing at the building from October 6-13 to build up a library of images to develop some screen prints.

Little Hall, which sits on Lavenham’s famous Market Place, is a treasure trove of interesting artefacts and art collected from all over the world by the Gayer-Anderson twins who restored the building in the 1920s and 30s.

Lucy said: “I will develop some screen prints from in the style of my ‘Fragments’ series, which explores layers of patterns as representations of layers of history, peeling back wallpaper from previous inhabitants so to speak.”

Lucy’s printmaking work is focused on patterns and she said she was especially drawn to Little Hall as she studied Indian art for her History of Art Degree many years ago at Sussex University.

She added: “Such is the serendipity of life that I discovered through researching for this project that the Indian Miniatures I helped to reframe at the V&A Museum when I did voluntary work there after my degree were the very same ones donated by the Gayer-Andersons.

“I am very much looking forward to sketching in situ and my aim is to produce a series of original prints that present the rich history of the house through patterns and motifs I find there.”

Graham Panton, chairman of Little Hall, said: “The Gayer-Andersons brought art and artists to Little Hall and this month we maintain that tradition with Lucy Perry as artist in residence.”
