A new pop-up library experience will be piloted in Suffolk to bring books to readers in the county’s up-and-coming communities.

This year the Suffolk Libraries Local scheme will be tested in Red Lodge, Shotley and Moreton Hall, all of which do not have a permanent library.

There will be a weekly session held in a public space where people will be able to browse and borrow from a selection of books, attend a range of activities for all age groups and use IT facilities for research.

The initiative, which is funded by Suffolk County Council and led by Suffolk Libraries, will be trialled in each area for six months and organisers are currently talking to residents to ensure the service will meet their needs.

Tony Brown, chairman of the Suffolk Libraries board, said the first three locations had been chosen because they were areas of increased housing development where the communities could benefit from the variety of services that libraries offer.

He added: “This is an exciting new project to help us explore new ways of extending the library service to communities in Suffolk.

“It’s something we are doing to support existing services, and it’s important that we are always looking to the future and how we can ensure the county’s library service meets the developing needs of the people of Suffolk.”

Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for finance and heritage, Richard Smith, said: “We think there’s an opportunity to reach younger children and the adults that care for them, as well as older people, who perhaps find it difficult to travel to their nearest library. We are bringing the service nearer to them.”

Suffolk Libraries Local will be launching in Red Lodge on March 16 at the Millennium Centre and will run every Thursday from 12.30pm to 3.45pm for six months.

People living in Red Lodge are encouraged to fill in this survey to help shape how the facility will look and what it will provide.

Details for Shotley and Moreton Hall, near Bury St Edmunds, are due to be announced soon.
