Haverhill Silver Band hit the right note to claim third place in a competition between some of the best brass bands in the country.

They took part in the Championship division of the National Mineworkers Open Brass Band Festival which was held at Butlins, in Skegness.

The band performed Dvorak’s Carnival Overture and they beat three top bands - GUS of Kettering, the current Midlands Champions originally known as the Munn and Felton Works Band, Flowers, the current West of England Champions from Gloucester, and Friary Guildford, the current London and Southern Counties Champions who are based in Woking.

Paul Filby, the band’s musical director, said: “It shows that all the hard work being put in by everyone involved, is really playing dividends.”

The band also took part in the Entertainment Competition in front of more than 3,000 people but just failed to get a top spot.
