Comedy legend Michael McIntyre had to ask an audience to explain the Suffolk phrase “on the huh” during a sell-out performance at the Ipswich Regent.

The comic performed at the theatre on Thursday, October 4 as part of his Big World Tour, which also includes dates at Wembley Arena and the O2.

When tickets went on sale for the Ipswich date back in May, all 1,500 seats sold out within 23 minutes.

With a more intimate venue, Mr McIntyre got chatting to the audience and asked them if they had any local sayings.

When one fan shouted out “on the huh” and explained it meant something that was wonky, the comic found it ‘hilarious’.

Melanie McGowan, from Saxmundham, was at the gig with her husband David and tweeted: “Michael McIntyre didn’t disappoint - funniest moment the audience trying to explain the saying on the huh #onlyinsuffolk”

Speaking to this paper, Mrs McGowan added: “The show was brilliant he had the whole of the audience in hysterics.

“He asked if we had a local accent and someone replied yes they said a few things and he then said why have we stolen the West Country accent why couldn’t we get our own.

“He then asked if we had any local sayings and someone shouted out ‘on the huh’.

“He didn’t understand what was being said and then asked someone to explain what it meant and they said something on the wonk which he found hilarious.

“It was such a great show and so great to be so up close to him with a smaller audience - he is starting the 02 this week I believe so we were really lucky to have him perform in Ipswich.”

Michael McIntyre’s tour finishes this November and has included dates in America, Australia and South Africa.

He currently presents Michael McIntyre’s Big Show on BBC One and was previously a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.
