Hundreds of farmers across Norfolk and Suffolk will be throwing open their gates to visitors this Sunday June 10.

Open Farm Sunday is all about families finding out more about farming, food production and the countryside – with farm walks, tractor rides, and the chance to meet livestock and spot wildlife. Try these 10 suggestions from LEAF (linking environment and farming) Open Farm Sunday, and for full details of all the farms opening, and any changes in activities, visit farmsunday.org

1 Coston Hall Farm, Coston, near Barnham Broom, NR9 4DT. costonhalldairy.co.uk

Brothers Mark and John Gill are the third generation of their family farming at Coston. The dairy herd is looked after by John and the arable cropping is taken care of by Mark, with the help of their farm staff team. On Open Farm Sunday visitors will be able to enjoy a dairy tour and milking demonstrations, tractor and trailer rides, a farm machinery demonstration and a tour of arable crops and woodland. A barbecue and refreshments will also be available and there will be a small play area and activities for children.

2 Home Farm, Nacton, near Ipswich. homefarmnacton.co.uk

Nacton Farm, on the Orwell Park Estate, on the north bank of the Orwell estuary, is a patchwork of woodland, heath, grass and arable land. It grows organic and conventional vegetables and cereals and will host walking tours, tractor and trailer rides and kids’ activities on Open Farm Sunday.

3 Lindsey Lodge Farm, Lindsey, near Sudbury, IP7 6QA. suffolkfresh.co.uk

On 10th June there will be open access to the growing areas with the opportunity to taste and buy strawberries. There will also be talks about the systems of production, tours of the site, mini tractor and trailer rides for children and cream teas available.

4 Old Hall Farm, Dereham Road, Westfield, Dereham, NR19 1QF.

Open Farm Sunday visitors can enjoy guided farm tours, sheep shearing demonstrations, pond dipping and meet the animals on the farm, and birds of prey. There will also be the chance to learn more about the farm’s conservation work and enjoy a barbecue using the farm’s own cattle and pigs.

5 Peele’s Norfolk Black Turkeys, Rookery Farm, Thuxton, near Dereham, NR9 4QJ. peeles-blackturkeys.co.uk

Peele’s is the home of The Original Norfolk Black Turkey and a fourth generation family farm. On Open Farm Sunday there will be the chance to enjoy a tour of farm land, learn about the rare breed turkeys and the crops grown and milled at the farm, see the cows on the meadow land and meet some horses.

6 Scarff’s Farms, Fenn’s Farm, Bildeston Road, Combs, near Stowmarket, IP14 2JZ.

Hear how this modern arable farm is establishing a new vineyard for English Sparking Wine. Talk with the team about growing wheat, oil seed rape, peas, spring beans and malting barley, see a static machinery display, enjoy tractor and trailer rides, learn about science in farming and tour the newly-planted vineyard.

7 Stangroom Bros Ltd, Hamrow Farm, Whissonsett, near Dereham, NR20 5SX.

This family farming business was formed in 1870 and today specialises in herbs. Enjoy tractor and trailer rides around the farm with the farmer and learn about herb production. There will also be a chance to find out about bees and honey, malt production and enjoy refreshments including lamb roast rolls with mint sauce, made using herbs grown by the farm.

8 Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses, Whitegate Farm, Norwich Road, Creeting St Mary, near Ipswich, IP6 8PG. suffolkcheese.co.uk

This family-run business established in 2004 by Jason and Katharine Salisbury produces fine hand-made cheeses by traditional methods from the milk of the farm’s own herd of pedigree Guernseys. The farm also rears its own beef and pork. On Open Farm Sunday there will be the chance to enjoy farm tours, farm walks, see the robotic milking system and milk vending machine, visit the farm shop, take part in cheese tasting and meet the cows and calves. There will also be children’s activities and refreshments including a hog roast, barbecue and ice cream.
