A star of stage and screen is to unveil a community’s new village sign for which he helped raise funds by performing a free show.

Roy Hudd, famous for his long-running Radio 2 sketch show, The News Huddlines, will be in Crowfield tomorrow to officially mark the construction of the new sign.

Mr Hudd, who lives in the village area, near Debenham, raised £2,700 with the show last November.

He said he “loved” the village and because of the community’s help he received when he moved to the area he was happy to put on the show.

Denise Wilcox was involved in the village’s Diamond Jubilee celebration in 2012 when the idea for the new sign was created.

She said: “There is no apparent village centre. Even the church is located some one-and-a-half miles from the main street and hidden from view as it surround by woodland.

“With information gathered from the Village Sign Society, I put a proposal forward to the parish council and a design based upon All Saints Church, a design created by Carol Raffe some 10 years earlier of ploughed fields and, of course, crows.

“With the support of the parish council a small project team got together to consult with the villagers and raise the funds.”

The team approached Norfolk sculptor, Steve Eggleton, who took the design ideas and turned them into the image of the church, used on the sign.

A fundraising target of £3,500 was established – with money from jubilee celebrations and a Suffolk County Council grant bringing the total up to £1,500 by last July.

The surplus funds, created from Mr Hudd’s show, will go towards the sign’s ongoing maintenance and its insurance.

Mr Hudd, who has written a poem for the occasion, will unveil the sign tomorrow at 2pm.
