A Felixstowe school is planning to change its school timetable meaning an earlier finish for students on a Friday.

Grange Community Primary School in the coastal town, part of the Orwell Multi Academy Trust, has proposed plans that would see the school day finish at 1pm on a Friday.

Currently the school runs from 8.55am until 3.15pm from Monday to Friday.

The trust is now planning to change the school timetable for the summer term which will see students in lessons between 8.30am to 3.30pm from Monday to Thursday and then 8.30am to 1pm on Friday.

A spokesman for the trust said: "Grange Community Primary School and the Orwell Multi-Academy Trust are committed to bringing about the strongest possible outcomes for our pupils and so we continually seek the most effective and efficient ways to achieve this.

"The timetable changes being proposed at Grange align with other schools across our Trust, where evidence has shown that facilitating the opportunity for teachers to work collaboratively during their statutory planning, preparation and assessment time is not only far less disruptive to pupils’ learning across the week but further improves the quality of teaching and learning.

"The school week for pupils will continue to meet the DFE’s guidance of 32.5 hours per week and consultation has taken place with parents and carers.

"As a result, to mitigate any risk in parents incurring childcare costs on a Friday afternoon, free childcare provision will be provided for families where primary carers are working.

"This is in addition to the school’s continued commitment to providing free breakfast and after school clubs, which are seen as vital enrichment opportunities for our children."

The news comes after Unity Schools Partnership, which runs schools across Suffolk, announced it would be extending the autumn half-term break by a week.
