It's a not-for-profit registered charity that provides water sports to the community in a unique Broads setting.

And a new season has been launched in style on Oulton Broad in Lowestoft - with volunteers joined by Waveney MP Peter Aldous, councillor Craig Rivett and schoolchildren - with the opportunities being offered locally showcased.

Oulton Broad Water Sports Centre (OBWSC) - based on Nicholas Everitt Park in Oulton Broad - recently welcomed Dell Primary School pupils to launch the new season.

With Mr Aldous and East Suffolk and Suffolk County councillor, Mr Rivett, in attendance the youngsters were able to try out raft building and experience wing surfing.

Run by centre manager Graham Colam, other qualified assistants and a team of volunteers, OBWSC offers opportunities to all aged eight upwards - allowing them to experience sailing, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and wing surfing.

With powerboat training and first aid courses also available, Mr Aldous was encouraged by the opportunities being offered.

Mr Aldous said: "I fully back and support the Water Sports Centre and their aims and I wish them well for the forthcoming season and beyond.

"Gaining on-the-water skills and a better understanding of water safety is so important for young people."

Activities throughout the year include school summer holiday activity weeks for young children, while local schools also regularly bring their pupils to gain on-the-water skills.

Mr Colam said: "We are particularly keen in these challenging times to ensure that, regardless of the ability to pay, all children are offered the same opportunity to try out our water sports.

"To that end we are seeking ring-fenced funding to support this initiative."

A range of formal courses and qualifications are also offered along with improver courses, and paddle craft may be hired by booking online or calling Graham on 01502 558487.

For businesses, OBWSC also provides corporate team building and fun activity day packages which have "proved very popular."
