A Suffolk pub will have its licence reviewed tomorrow after it was suspended following an alleged assault.

The Coopers Dip pub in Albion Street, Saxmundham, had its licence immediately suspended by Suffolk Coastal District Council’s licensing and health sub-committee, after Suffolk police requested the interim measure the day after the reported incident.

The committee concluded that it was “necessary, in order to prevent crime and disorder, for the premises licence to be suspended immediately”.

The report documents published ahead of the licence review hearing this morning revealed that the premises licence holder Simon Clarke was alleged to have “struck a customer on the back of the head with a glass or bottle, whereupon the customer fell to the floor and was beaten by Mr Clarke”. The report said that the assault “only ceased due to the intervention of Mr Clarke’s son”.

The document added that police were not convinced Mr Clarke’s son would be able to restrain his father’s temper.

Mr Clarke appealed the decision, and at a meeting on February 12 appeared in person to refute the claims.

Following representations from Mr Clarke and Suffolk police the licence suspension was upheld.

The pub has remained closed since the licence was suspended on February 9, and the leasehold has since been put up for sale.

This morning, Suffolk Coastal’s licensing and health sub-committee will make a decision on the pub’s licence.

Among the measures open to the committee are modifying the existing licence – such as imposing further conditions or restrictions – excluding a licensable activity, removing the supervisor, suspend the licence for up to three months or revoke the licence entirely.

A Suffolk police spokesman said: “Police requested an interim step of the immediate suspension of the licence due to a serious assault which had occurred on the premises on 7 February on a 35-year-old man.

“Police feel the interim suspension should be imposed in order to support the prevention of further crime and disorder.

“A man in his 50s has been arrested in connection with the incident and released under investigation.”

A spokesman from the pub was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
